Even if you don’t know these animals or their owners, you are helping homeless pets and shelters by sharing their stories. If you spot a stray dog, be a conscientious neighbor by calling animal control and reporting the incident. Better yet, bring the dog to the local shelter yourself, if you are able to get closer or know how to handle stray dogs. Today, in many countries, there is a movement to adopt rescued animals instead of supporting the over breeding and mistreatment of dogs and cats by “puppy mill” breeders.

My situation is that my new kitten went missing whom I rescued from a ‘free to good home’. We had only had him a short time, the local Heathmont vet transferred him to homeless hounds instead of where they normally send missing cats being coldstream animal aid. We searched and called everywhere being promised that if the cat was found it would have been sent to coldstream.

We serve the community by offering rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing all of the animals in our care. I Stand With My Pack is a non-profit organization providing global assistance to save the lives of animals and prevent suffering and cruelty. ISWMP’s domestic efforts focus on the successful removal of dogs from LA city and county high-risk kill shelters, assisting dogs through the rehabilitative process and successfully placing them in their forever homes. Dogs on Deathrow is a non-profit organization which rescues dogs facing imminent execution if they do not get interim financial sponsors or foster parents – or receive medical treatment needed to become adoptable. These are “last chance” dogs in high kill shelters who, with your help, can get their “second chance” and become wonderful family pets.

As well as those that are born to stray cats, there is a large population of feral cats. Feral means a domesticated animal that has reverted to living wild. Feral cats can live in fields, barns, and around farms, but they can also live in urban environments. In total, there are more than 1 million stray and feral felines in the UK. Cats are even more prolific breeders than dogs, and a single unneutered female cat, and her offspring, can result in 370,000 unwanted kittens in just 7 years.

Volunteers are a dedicated “army of compassion” and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death. Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.
