A shelter for homeless animals is a place where homeless, abandoned or lost animals, mostly dogs and cats, are kept. Shelters are a key component of animal welfare and have four main functions: prompt assistance and care for the animal, including the relief of suffering through veterinary care or euthanasia; long-term care for an animal that does not immediately find an old or new owner; efforts to reunite a lost animal with its former owner; and finding a new home or a new owner for a homeless animal.

Animal shelters are divided into private shelters, funded mostly by donations, and municipal shelters, funded by the state. Each shelter has its own characteristics, but in general in all shelters dogs live in enclosures, go for a walk once a day and eat dry food. Many shelters also house cats, and some provide a roof over their heads for other animals in distress.

Often, the day-to-day care is handled by shelter staff or owners. Almost everywhere there are volunteers who walk dogs, treat them, foster them, and bring canned food mixed with buckwheat and rice-so you can inexpensively feed many animals at once. Of course, there aren’t enough volunteers for everyone, so some wait for their friend who comes to visit them once a week, while others just watch how lucky a fellow dog is.

Medical Care at the Shelter

Once at the shelter, the animal is immediately spayed and given all the necessary vaccinations. Nevertheless, we cannot say that all shelter animals are absolutely healthy.

However, most shelter animals are healthy and ready for “adoption”, but they need special attention and care at least for the first period of their new life at home.
