Guide dogs (colloquially known in the USA as seeing eye dogs) are assistance dogs trained to lead blind or visually impaired people around obstacles. Although dogs can be trained to navigate various obstacles, they are red–green colour blind and incapable of interpreting street signs. The human does the directing, based on skills acquired through previous mobility training. The handler might be likened to an aircraft’s navigator, who must know how to get from one place to another, and the dog is the pilot, who gets them there safely. In several countries guide dogs, along with most other service and hearing dogs, are exempt from regulations against the presence of animals in places such as restaurants and public transportation. Every 7 minutes someone in the U.S. becomes blind or visually impaired.

Nowadays, Guide Dogs’ portfolio of services has expanded to include much more than dogs. The organisation provides a wide range of services that support people living with low vision or blindness, from Orientation and Mobility Services to Occupational Therapy, Peer Support and Connection Services, Therapy Dogs and more. Once a guide dog and the recipient receives necessary training, Guide Dogs for the Blind provides lifelong veterinary care and essential services for the guide dog. Guide Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit located in San Rafael and is committed to helping the blind community gain a sense of independence through guide dogs. More than 500 traits analogous to human genetic conditions have been described in dogs—both species can suffer from cancer, eye disease, or dysplasia of the hip, to name a few.

The service animal movement did not take hold in America until Nashville resident Morris Frank returned from Switzerland after being trained with one of Eustis’s dogs, a female German shepherd named Buddy. Frank and Buddy embarked on a publicity tour to convince Americans of the abilities of service animals and the need to allow people with service animals access to public transportation, hotels, and other areas open to the public. In 1929, Eustis and Frank co-founded The Seeing Eye school in Nashville, Tennessee . Guide and assistance dogs are of course more than welcome in Efteling.

Assistance Dogs International is a coalition of non-profit organizations that raise, train and place assistance dogs. ADI does not directly provide, train, certify or register individual assistance dogs or assistance dog teams, as that is the function of our member organizations. Guide dogs are assistance dogs trained to lead blind and visually impaired people around obstacles.

By utilizing positive training methods, inmates are learning not only how to positively and effectively train our dogs, but how to more positively and effectively interact in their environment and with others. Currently this program is operating in four California prisons. Criticism of guide dog charities often is based of the cost of training a dog and pairing it with a person. Dogs mainly wash out for health reasons — bad eyesight, hip or stomach problems — and for temperament, such as being too calm or too high-strung. And they can work for only eight to 10 years before they retire to become pets. A blind person could need six or seven dogs in a lifetime, which is a considerable expense.
