Homeless Assistance

Our clinics in Grays Ferry and the Northeast serve tens of thousands of pets every year whose caretakers may not afford care elsewhere. From volunteering and fostering to joining our lifesaving team, there are many ways to get involved. While cats will be available at the center and via virtual adoption, dogs are still only available virtually. Check out the adopt page for information on updated adoption options.
It’s the harsh reality of life and the direct consequence of irresponsible ownership. For all the homeless, abandoned, unwanted, and forgotten pets, shelters and rescues are the only chance to have a happy life. Thousands of animals find themselves in local shelters each year, with no permanent home through adoption guaranteed. We find homes for abandoned cats and dogs in New York City and throughout the Tri-State area, and provide behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. Mass Animal Fund provides free spay/neuter/vaccination resources to Commonwealth cats and dogs in need and provides free training to Animal Control Officers.
- In 2006, SAVE merged with Friends of Homeless Animals, an organization founded in 1998 that had purchased property in Skillman, NJ for a shelter.
- Through the efforts of American Humane and State Farm.2014Responded within hours to the deadly EF-5 tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma.
- Among other things, the organization also took care of 139 dogs and 285 rabbits.
- Together, these organizations were able to build the shelter of which Dr. Jaynes had dreamed, in the community where she had spent 40 years caring for homeless animals.
If you can’t afford to make a financial contribution, consider donating some gently used goods or volunteer time! Call ahead to see what your local shelters or rescues need most, but blankets, toys, food, and cleaning products are almost always needed. Despite the setbacks of the pandemic, we are encouraged by all these efforts to keep families together and provide veterinary care to more families in need.

Although the door-to-door street search is best carried out near home, don’t neglect visiting animal shelters in all surrounding neighborhoods. It’s possible your pet was picked up by a good Samaritan, transported, and then ran off again. You and others who know your pet need to personally visit the SPCA shelters and other animal shelters on a daily basis. Do not simply call these shelters and ask them to check on whether your pet is in the building. Ten different people might describe your pet ten different ways…only you know which pet is yours.
Resources For Pet Owners Experiencing Homelessness
We know that providing a good home for every pet requires a host of hands-on programs for pets and their people. Since 1926, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa has helped more than one million pets — every day, every hour, every second, the ARL has been there. Sometimes all they need is a warm bed, a full bowl or a kind touch. Other times they need protection from their abuser, emergency surgery, or reassurance that they are finally safe.
Adopt A Pet
Our Ambassadors are a vital part of the rescue and adoption resource in their communities. They help raise the standards of care by supplementing the other sources of food and supplies for animal welfare non-profits. This allows the recipient groups to shift scarce funds to other needs, such as spay/neuter, wellness or facility improvements. Rescue Bank grants donated pet food and supplies to smaller, less-visible non-profits that have limited access to resources. We’ve granted more than $30 million in essential supplies to over 300 animal welfare organizations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Our adoptions, foster, kennel, behavior and animal control teams learn first-hand about proper care of homeless, stray and neglected animals and work hard to find them new homes. OPIN was co-founded by shelter volunteers and is an all-volunteer registered 501 non-profit. Our mission is to promote adoption of homeless animals, and to provide assistance to pets in need through medical treatment, training, and education.

The Beatrice Humane Society is an open-door shelter that takes in animals regardless of age or health. Adoption fees, which vary based on a pet’s age, health, and potential adoptability, include spay or neuter, vaccines, treatments for parasites, microchip, grooming, and health testing. The shelter also has a cat program in which cats who aren’t suited for indoor living can be “hired” as mousers at businesses, barns, or farms, with adoption fees waived. Maine’s Animal Rescue League of Greater Portland is an open-admission facility that takes in animals not only from local communities, but also works with 60 partner shelters and rescues around the country to bring pets in for adoption. Adoption fees vary based on the type of animal, age, and medical needs, and all fees cover spay/neutering, vaccines, leash and collar, and heartworm testing.
